Recipe: Sweet and Sour Meatballs (1979)

Main Dishes - Beef and Other Meats
SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS

1 1/4 pounds ground beef
1/4 cup fine dry breadcrumbs
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 tablespoon fat or oil
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce

Mix beef, breadcrumbs, onion, milk, and egg well. Shape into 36 balls, about 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

Heat fat in a heavy frypan over moderate heat. Brown meatballs lightly in fat. Drain off excess fat.

Mix brown sugar and flour. Add remaining ingredients. Pour over meatballs and heat, stirring until thickened. Cover and cook slowly for 25 minutes. Turn meatballs once during cooking.

Makes 6 servings, 6 meatballs each
