ISO: Use of alum in pickles

Misc.
Hello,
All growing up my mother has put a small amount of alum in our dill pickles. This past several years I have seen failure after failure of good firm dill pickles from friends and neighbors. I mentioned the use of alum and was told it is not recommended anymore. Does anyone know why?
