ISO: Weighted gauge?

Iw as just coming to see about them here -- have not looked them up yet but hubby gave me a Presto Pride hard aodized 8 qt for christmas -- I was wondering if they were good before i break it in .... it has a dial though -- why is "weighted" easier?
