ISO: Why do the cherries sink?

I have a cake recipe that requires maraschino cherries. The problem is they all sink to the bottom when that are supposed to be all through the cake. What am I doing wrong? I use a spring form pan. This driving me nuts? There are walnuts in the cake too.
Help!!!!!
