bread machine

Misc.

I agree that checking consumers reports, etc. is a good idea.

Also, think about how you will be using the machine - do you plan to make a lot of whole grain breads? If so, be sure to get a machine that has a whole grain setting ... it will save a lot of heartaches. Some people like the 'cake', 'jam', 'quick bread' settings .... I don't find them necessary for myself. I can make a quick bread just as quickly by hand ... and like the shape better in the oven (and no blade holes!) Some people love that setting.

If you do a lot of coffee cakes, cinnamon buns, etc. a sweet roll setting might be for you. I do most of those on dough/manual - and then take out shape and bake. Love them.

Some people like a 'rapid' 1 hour bread cycle. this is in additon to the regular cycles and I guess great for very busy people . I've heard a lot of good things about it - but I'm retired so its not that important to me.

Check out the machine - to see that it is reasonably sturdy - and how the pan goes in and out. Look at the panel where you set for times, types, etc. ... does it look easy to understand? Check the warranty. When you do buy one - use your credit card and then use it like made the first 2 weeks or so ..(fill yourfreezer, feed your neighbors, etc.) that way you'll know you like it. Some machines are noisier than others. Some complain of machines 'walking' on the counter. I've never had this problem. A little noise at certain times. Walking, I'm told can be curbed by putting a towel under the machine.

With the sales now you should be able to buy a 'decent' machien for about $45 - 75. Regal, Breadman, Welbilt, etc. all have good points as far as I can see. Sears, Wards, etc. have some of these machines but with a different name ... and sometimes at a better price. Also, some of the warehouse stores have some good buys.

I love my breadmaker - it is getting old (over 4 years) and since I use it at least 2 times a week, I feel I've gotten my money's worth! However, I'm hoping it wil last a few more months.

Also, look for deals on flours, yeast, etc. after you get your machine. The warehouse stores have instant or bread yeast in 1 or 2 lb pkgs for about $2.99 ... vs. 4 to 5 oz jars in supermarkets for $4 to 5. According toKing Arthur Flour Baking book, etc. you can keep them past the use by date in your freezer ... and they still work well. I know -- I do. Just wrap it well. Use good ingredients and follow a few of the basic recipes in the book at first ... then branch out and you'll have a ball. Happy holidays.
