Gingerbread muffins question

Hi I really love Jason's Deli muffins and was excited to try out this recipe. But i had a question on the bran cereal... Am i supposed to grind it into powder then sir it in or it works well as is?
Also, does jasons deli have dates in their muffins or can i opt it out?
