Iced Sugar Cookie HELP!!

I have decided to make iced Christmas Tree sugar cookies this year. I don't have a clue where to start. I would appreciate any receipes - hints or "tricks of the trade". I have always made "drop" type cookies and have NEVER made a roll and cutout cookie. Actually, I don't know if it is a sugar or butter cookie I want. I would like for them to be a little thick and soft.

Help - my son's friend's mother makes these and he always brags about them. I want to show him that his Momma can make them too! :-)
