It's me again, just reread the original thread, and the great recipes from Betsy
Misc.Wow, that was SO interesting!
I looked up naranja agria this morning, and it says they are called "Seville". Now, the Sevilles from my childhood were smooth skinned, the ones I get here (on the other side of the country from where I grew up) are bumpy, as are the ones I remember from when I lived in the D.R. Whether they taste the same, I just don't know. If someone has both varieties available, perhaps they can perform a comparison?
I also cried reading the posts about Jon Edrik. Gladys, you must tell us how he is doing, as it is over a year since the initial diagnosis. I know you moved back to Ponce to be closer and more helpful to Seilita and Jose Luis, but I can't remember if I have heard so much with regard to Jon Edrick. Please forgive me for not asking sooner.
I would like to tell you a funny story about an autistic child who lives a few doors away from us.
For those of you who do not already know, my DH is from the Dominican Republic. Now, he has been here (in Canada) since '91, and you know how some people lose the accent of their mother tongue? Well, Luis is definitely NOT one of them!
One day he was out front of our house gardening, and along came the child with autism (Brandon). He is very outgoing, and has had many great techniques and treatments for his autism. In fact, there was a ground-breaking kind of treatment I know he was part of...his mother is very, very "out there" in creating opportunities for him. I couldn't tell you what they consist of exactly...his mom is kind of hard to get to know. Let's just leave it at that!
So, anyway, he started talking to Luis, and they had quite a few minutes of conversation. Brandon was about 12 at the time, and is the same age as our younger child, so Luis kept the conversation going, knowing what a child this age is interested in.
After they had been conversing back and forth, as I say for quite a little while, Brandon said (ok, get ready for the punch line!)"Hey...do you speak any English?"
Gosh, I just love telling that story! Poor Luis, I guess Brandon doesn't have any exposure to people with an accent!
On another note, after reading through the posted recipes, I saw a great tip from Gina's mami...freeze the chicken breasts, pork chops, fish, what have you WITH the sour orange juice, in appropriately sized portions. How good is that?? An excellent and convenient way to extend the sour orange season.
Ok, that's all for now...somebody else's turn to post!
Cheers!
Carolyn!
