Kilroy to the Rescue!!!

Misc.
Hi Elly and gang:

I believe this "Kilroy thing" all started during WW-II with a person, by the name of Kilroy (believe it or not) who was a 'Final Inspector' - I'm not sure where (it was rumored they worked for GMC) when they finished inspecting the article - Howitzer, tank, plane or whatever - they were required to put their inspection stamp on the article to show that it had been inspected, and Kilroy in addition he/she would draw the face with the 'Jimmy Durante' nose on the side to remember and remind others that it had been inspected.

Some of these markers were still on the equiptment when it arrived overseas and at the front.

The little caricature caught on all over U.S., in England before the "Invasion" and in Europe where ever our GI's were, in all branches of the service.

GI's also put it on the town signs they captured, it wound up being an American 'Craze/fad' world wide in Europe and in the Pacific.

If this ain't true, it sure sounds good - but that's how I remember it!

later -- j
