Memories of my Dad (a baker at Helms Bakery)

Misc.
It makes me feel good knowing that my dad made so many people happy. He was a baker in the Danish department at Helms Bakery when I was born. He worked there for almost 9 years before he had to quit due to inhaling too much flour and having it collect in his lungs. The one thing I will always remember him talking about was Mr. Helms would walk through the bakery and knew each employee's name. Employee recognition is a very important talent and goes a long way in building a business like Helms. It is a shame that Mr. Helms' son did not have the same passion and talents.

My Dad always had a passion for baking and 30+ years later opened a donut shop up in Hawthorne, CA. One afternoon my wife had asked him if he could make some miniture Danish pastries for her to sell at a fund raiser. We watched in amazement as he rolled, cut, and formed nearly 80 dozen in a matter of hours. It was as if he never left the bakery.
