Ann,yes, some of the recipes do just call for cooking the lemon and peel first for a bit to make them soften, then add the sugar as opposed to letting them sit overnight. I would just do whichever method you prefer.
The orange marmalade I made had me cook first, no overnight soaking. I should have cooked it longer, since it never set up as much as I had hoped for. It still tasted good, though.
