I would also use mayonaise and cubed or chopped meats as base, and add different things - I prefer onion, thinly sliced celery, and pickled red bell peppers - or chopped red pepper and pickled cucumber.
Some like canned, crushed unsweetened pineapple together with the celery and/or walnuts.
I would not use dill, but maybe a little tarragon. It does not taste too bad with a hint of curry either. My family also like it if I use a couple of tablespoons Thousand island dressing mixed in the mayo - but then no other spices.
