Misc.

In addition to the books Betsy recommended I believe Sunset has a How-to-boil-water basic cookbook out there or how about "Cooking for Dummies"?

The shopping trip idea is good too as when I was in college my roommate and I decided we wanted something to eat besides the tortillas/cheese/tabasco, potato pancakes/applesauce and potato salad that we were living on. We searched "Joy of Cooking" and decided on Beef Stroganoff. So, off we went to the butcher. Of course we were on a budget so we bought some pre-cut chunks of meat (STEW MEAT) as they were reasonable and less work. I guarantee...it was the worst Beef Stroganoff! Fortunately, we had just baked a loaf of that frozen bread so we ate the bread with honey for our dinner and a hungry fellow student popped in and devoured that chewy stroganoff without a bat of an eye! Boy, were we dumb!!! LOL.
