One possibility ...
Misc. Hi Susan,
I sincerely have my doubts that your friend had the rice dish you speak of in a Japanese restaurant per se (a lot of "Asians" make it authentic?), but assuming that she did, I really don't think she had "oseki-han" (mochi rice with azuki beans) unless it was during some kind of a celebration or holiday -- the dish is only served for celebratory occasions.
You know, the Japanese version of omu-rice (rice wrapped in omelet) features stir-fried rice using ketchup. Is it possible that the restaurant decided to make some original version using ketchup, paprika, Korean spices (not all spice powder used for kimchi is hot, hot, hot!), oyster sauce, Worchestershire sauce, etc. to make it brick-colored?
I don't know if this helps, but just thought that I would mention it ....
Take care,
Cathy
