Jim, to not make them so hot I've read on other websites that you should not soak them for so long. The longer you soak them the more oil the toothpicks absorb, and therefore, the hotter they'll be. Probably should experiment with 1 toothpick for a short time and then if it's not hot enough soak another one for a little longer etc. until you get it to suit your tastes.
