Substitute for Kirsch

I would definitely use cherry flavored vodka for Cherry Heering.
Kirschwasser is not sweetened at all, while Cherry heering is a fortified cherry wine, and pretty sweet. It would be a tragedy, say in a cheese fondue, which is one recipe which frequently calls for Kirsch.
Sometimes you can also just use brandy. Depends on what kind of recipe.
