Von - Regarding diabetics and wine (IMHO)
Misc.I am not a physician. I am diabetic. In my opinion, there is no simple answer to your question.
There are many forms of diabetes. Many organs in our bodies are affected by diabetes.
Diabetics should ALWAYS discuss alcohol consumption with their doctor.
Some alcoholic beverages contain higher amounts of sugar and carbohydrate -- these include sweet wines, sweet vermouth and wine coolers. They may increase blood sugar levels too much.
It is not advised to drink any alcohol when taking certain medications. People taking oral hypoglycemic agents may have a reaction to the alcohol.
With some people, alcoholic beverages can make blood sugar drop which can also be dangerous.
Also, it is important to not drink alcohol on an empty stomach. Alcohol is quickly absorbed by the body. One of its more notable effects (especially for diabetic's) is that it blocks the release of sugar (glucose) into the blood while the liver is removing Alcohol. The only source of glucose until the Alcohol has been eliminated from the body is from food being digested in the gut
Again, I personally believe it is best to have a physician who knows the diabetic's medical status to answer your question. Respectfully, Kelly~WA
