Recipe: Baked Fondue

BAKED FONDUE

Note from source: This is my late mother's recipe for Baked Fondue it is easy to prepare and delicious.

16 slices homemade quality white bread (trim crusts)
3/4 cup softened butter
12 oz. Swiss or Gruyere cheese cut in 1/4-inch slices
3 cups light cream
4 eggs
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. white pepper

Butter two 9 in cake pans.

Butter bread on 1 side, cut into fingers, 2-inches wide. Cut cheese in strips same size as bread. Place layer of bread, butter side up, in pans. Fill all spaces, then a layer of cheese. Top with a layer of bread.

Combine cream, eggs, salt, and white pepper. Whisk all together. Pour evenly over bread and cheese.

Bake at 375 for 35 to 40 minutes or until puffed and golden. Cut and serve immediately.

*The bread and cheese part can be done the night before so all you have to do Christmas morning is make the custard and bake!
