Recipe: Caramel Nut Squares (with beaten egg white topping, 1950's)

1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup white granulated sugar
1 cup chopped nuts
Cream butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks and vanilla; set aside.
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and add to creamed mixture. Spread dough in the well-greased 9x9x2-inch baking pan.
Beat egg whites until foamy and gradually add white sugar; add chopped nuts. Spread over top of the first mixture.
Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) 20-25 minutes or until done.
