Recipe: Chocolate-Date Bars (chocolate and date-nut layers, 1960's)

CHOCOLATE-DATE BARS

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
1 1/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/4 cup plus 1/3 cup sugar, divided use
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
1 cup finely snipped dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Melt butter or margarine with chocolate; stir in the 1 1/3 cups flour, the 1/4 cup sugar, and the milk. Pat in 9x9x2-inch baking pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes.

In mixing bowl, combine the remaining 1/3 cup sugar, the 2 tablespoons flour, and the baking powder. Add eggs; beat till fluffy.

Fold in dates and walnuts; spread over chocolate layer.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes more. Cool; cut in bars.
