I stumbled across a wonderful, and CHEAP way of effectively cleaning silver. At the time I discovered this, I had managed to turn a sterling silver claddaugh ring black that my husband had got me for an anniversary present. That was the day that I learned cleaning with acidic cleansers while wearing silver was a very bad thing to do. I thought the ring was ruined.
TO CLEAN SILVER:
Put a piece of aluminum foil in a container, or use an aluminum pot if cleaning a lot of silver. Lay the silver on top of the aluminum foil. Pour baking soda over the silver. Bring water to a boil in a pan or kettle on the stove. Pour the boiling water over the baking soda, silver, and aluminum foil. Allow to sit until just warm. Remove the silver and wipe it with a soft cloth, or non abrasive brush under running water.
There is a reaction between the aluminum and the silver that is caused by the baking soda. This reaction is what removes the tarnish.
