Recipe(tried): Hungarian Walnut Bars (Woman's Day, 1970's)

HUNGARIAN WALNUT BARS

2 1/4 cups flour
1 cup white granulated sugar, divided use
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
2 egg yolks
1 tablespoon brandy
4 cups walnuts, finely chopped
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
4 unbeaten egg whites
Confectioners' sugar (for dusting top)

Sift flour, 1/2 cup sugar and salt. Blend in butter; add egg yolks and brandy. Pat evenly into greased and floured pan 15x10-inch pan.

Bake at 325 degrees F for 15 minutes.

In a heavy saucepan, put the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, walnuts, brown sugar, cinnamon and egg whites. Cook, stirring over low heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and cook until mixture no longer clings to sides of pan. Spread onto baked mixture.

Return to oven for 15 minutes longer Cool.

Cut into bars. Dust with confectioners' sugar.
