Pat ~ here are a couple of recipes previously posted here on TKL that seem to resemble the kuchen you describe. I do hope so!

Crumb Cake (Krum Kuchen)
1 cup Butter or other shortening
2 cups Sugar
4 tsp Baking powder
4 Egg, separated
1 cup Milk
4 cups Flour butter, melted cinnamon
Combine sugar, flour and baking powder which have
been sifted together. Add the shortening and crumb
well with the fingers. Take out 1 cup of crumbs and to the remaining add the well beaten egg yolks and milk.
Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Mix well. Pour mixture into well-greased deep pans and sprinkle top with the crumbs. Bake at 450-F about 45 minutes.
Sprinkle top with melted butter and cinnamon when

The Queen Victoria Inn's Koffee Kuchen
KOFFEE KUCHEN
Yield: 8 servings
Kuchen
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
2 eggs, separated
1 1/2cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup milk
Topping
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Heat oven to 350 F. Butter 12x8-inch (2-quart) baking dish. In large bowl, beat sugar and 1/2 cup butter until well blended. Add egg yolks; beat well. Sift together 1 1/2 cups flour and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder; add to butter mixture alternately with milk. In small bowl, beat egg whites until stiff; fold gently into batter. Spread batter evenly in buttered dish.
In small bowl, combine all topping ingredients; mix
until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle evenly over batter.
Bake at 350 F for 28 to 32 minutes or until toothpick
inserted in center comes out clean. Cut into squares;
serve warm.
