NUTTY BROWN SCONES
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 tablespoons irish or scottish oatmeal, uncooked
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) butter
2/3 cup buttermilk
Mix all the dry ingredients. Rub in the butter. Add the buttermilk and knead the dough well.
Roll out to a thickness of 1/2-inch. Brush with milk. Cut into rounds.
Bake at 425 degrees F for 15-20 minutes.
