Recipe: Original Girl Scout Cookies (sugar cookies, 1920's, 1930's, 3 recipes)

"In the 1920's when Girl Scout cookies were first thought up, a general recipe was handed out to each troop and each girl made her own and sold them. Original recipe was submitted for publication by Elizabeth K. Butler of Maryland."
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1/2 cup milk
2 tsp. vanilla
6 cups flour
4 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. salt
Cream softened butter and sugar in large bowl. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla. Mix well.
In separate bowl, mix flour, salt, baking powder. Add slowly to creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition. Refrigerate at least 2 hours.
WHEN READY TO BAKE:
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F.
Spoon out enough to dough roll out on pastry board, and leave rest in refrigerator. Roll to 1/8-inch thickness and cut with cookie cutter. Place on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees F for 6-8 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Let cookie sheet cool before putting fresh dough on it.
ORIGINAL GIRL SCOUT COOKIES
"This recipe was baked by Girl Scouts in the 1930's."

2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
Confectioner's sugar (for sprinkling on tops)
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, milk, vanilla and flour which has been sifted with salt and baking powder; mix well. Chill 1 hour.
Roll very thin and cut about the size of a baking powder can cover. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 425 degrees F for 8-10 minutes until golden. Sprinkle with confectioner's sugar.
Makes 6 to 7 dozen cookies

1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour and baking powder. Roll dough. Cut into desired shapes. Place on greased baking sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes.
