Recipe: Scungilli Marinara

Sounds more like you had scungilli, which is a mollusk, also known as a whelk, or sometimes also incorrectly called conch.  Most often it's done in some sort of Italian preparation, either with marinara sauce or olive oil/garlic and linguini.

It's really very good, and often found up north in the ethnic neighborhoods, Italian usually.
