Laurie ~ Hi, what a cute idea for the graduate. I have made a few "animal" cakes. One of them I used the lamb cake pan mold as the base and made it into a dog. I frosted it using the large tip that has multiple holes in it making the dog hair. Press the tip against the cake and drag it outward while squeezing the tube. I made a doggie collar with string candy. I frosted crackers for the doggie ears. I used candies for the nose and eyes. I also used the same tip and bright green frosting and made tufts of green grass (with chocolate candies for rocks) around the base of the dog.
Another one I made was a standing horse... sort of. I made a chocolate flat cake and used chocolate and green frosting to make a pasture. I also made a water feature using piping gel. Oh, and of course, chocolate candies for rocks. Then, I fudged a bit there, but I bought a tall plastic horse and frosted it (thinly) and put on top of the cake. It was rather cute. Everyone thought, at first, that the horse was cake too because it was frosted. By the way, I put the horse through the dishwasher before frosting it. I was glad, because the frosting lovers at the party licked the frosting off the horse.
Hope these ideas help. Have fun.
