We put a wooden screen door on (easy enough to trim). With our 5th kid if a toy was in front of the door, bloocking it open, one of our cats who go for the warmest things in the house was found twice in the crib with Matthew. To this day the cat still sleeps with Matthew. But it did scare the heck out of me! The cat was curled up beside him. Not on top of Matthew. Our cats have their front claws declawed. When we moved into our new house 10 years ago I said either they are declawed or they don't come with us. Can you tell I'm NOT a cat lover?!! So we have never worried about them scartching the babies or kids. But yes a screen door works great and you can hear through it.
