ISO: Food/Theme For Dad's 80th Bday In Sept. 2006

My dad will turn 80 on Labor Day. Born in 1926 & raised in the Depression Era along with 5 other siblings. No stranger to sacrifice and simpler times and while most of his friends are now deceased, he does have me (39) my older brother (42), my husband (39) and my mother (71). We want to celebrate his life and pay tribute to a member of whats been called "The Greatest Generation". I've thought about music from his youth (30's & 40s) and even 50s and 60s. What I need help with is menu items. I don't really want to have a BBQ, but maybe more in line with home-style cooking and homemade fare - but my recipe books don't date back that far. And many ladies from that time, cooked from memory and a pinch or this and that. Any thoughts out there on food or any other ideas? We're looking at approx.30 to 40 people for this meal./dinner.
