ISO: heavy Italian Bread?

Misc.
How can I get my Italian bread to come out more dense and heavier in texture instead of light and airy? I prefer a heavy bread but cannot seem to bake it this way in a coventional oven. I could probably use less yeast but it would'nt rise much.
