ISO: How to cook dried garbanzo beans (chic peas)

I have been simmering garbanzo beans in a pan of water for about 20 hours - STILL not soft. Package had no directions on cooking. They had a stale odor to them at first - didn't know if that was right or not. Anyone have any ideas?
