ISO: Poor Mans Pie...A sugar Pie with a clear filling

I am looking for a recipe for a pie that my husband calls (Poor Mans Pie) that his grandmother made. It is a pie made out of mostly white sugar and has a clear like filling when baked..I would love to have the recipe so I can suprise him sometime!
