ISO: Shallots

Misc.
I am trying to learn how to cook, and this site is great. I'm not sure if this is the best forum for general questions. I KNOW NOTHING. The question today is what exactly are "shallots"? Several of the recipes I am reading for spinach quiche call for "shallots". Is this the best forum to ask these types of questions? Are there good books that answer these kinds of simple, questions for people who know almost nothing about cooking?
