Thanks for everyone's help. My hubby maintains that figgy dowdy is actually made with plums. British friend agrees whole-heartedly. She's also on the lookout for those elusive recipes for me. The Patrick O'Brian books are available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I'm not advertising, we live overseas, and must get our books through mail order, or online. This is how he found them, that's all. They are probably available at bookstores, having not set foot in the continental US for more than a few days at a time for the last 7 years, it's hard to say what's in ANY store there.
