Hi Patty;
I think a lot of your problem is that you use cold water. Detergents cannot dissolve properly in cold water. Also the cold water does not get out oily residue from deodorants etc.
I use tide liquid detergent, start out with pure hot water with a capful for a full load. After a few minutes when I can see that it is dissolved, I switch to warm water setting for wash and rinse. My whites stay white and bright, never gray and dingy.
