Christy, I'm betting that in the past you have shaped and iced your cakes for your party theme. If you're not comfortable trying to shape a dragon, maybe switch gears a little and think in another direction. Go online or to party stores, and see if you can find some small dragon figurines to go on top of the cake. Then you can decorate the cake itself as a setting for the dragons. I did a dinosaur cake for one of my sons like that a few years ago - I iced the cake with a sturdy chocolate icing that I could swirl to look like mud in some places, and I used some extra bits of cake to build a little "mountain" on one side. I used blue jello to create a little pond on the other side. Some green-tinted coconut made grass to go around the pond. Chocolate cookie crumbs made great rocks. Then I set the dino figurines among the landscape features. I thought it looked pretty good, and I had a lot of fun putting it together.
If you decide to try to shape a dragon after all, look for a simple coloring book page to give you an easy shape to start with. Then hit the grocery store and look over the candy, cracker, and cookie aisles with an eye toward figuring out what would make good scales, fire, teeth, and wings. Nilla wafers might work for scales, or maybe nonpareils? Fruit roll-up stuff could be trimmed to look like flames to come out of the dragon's mouth. Candy corn for teeth? These ideas are just off the top of my head, I'm sure your imagination will kick in and you'll find lots of stuff to use.
Have fun, and good luck. However it turns out, I'm sure your son will be impressed - and will always remember that you cared enough to give it a go.
