re: French bread failure (bread machine)

I have used the same recipe for French bread. I usually have good results, but every once in awhile I have the result you described. I think it may happen when the yeast comes into contact with the liquid. I have seen bread machine recipes which say that when making the well for the yeast, to make sure that the well is not so deep that the yeast hits the liquid which is beneath the flour.
