The Feast of St. Joseph originated in Sicily,(I'm not sure of the year). there was a drought which led to a famine in the country, so the faithful prayed to St. Joseph to intercede for them with Jesus. Their prayers were answered, when it began to rain, thus ending the famine. In thanksgiving, the people of Sicily, prepared a Feast for St. Joseph, omitting any meat from the feast. Here in new Orleans, the tradition carries on to this day, with people "having" St. Joseph alters either out of thanksgiving for prayers answered or just o honor St. Joseph. I'm sorry to get this information to you so far after your request, but I was only looking around today and saw it. I hope you find this helpful. There are certain foods that are traditionally on the alter, but alas, I'm not the expert there. I've only eaten the food (YUM!)
