TOM SAWYER'S FOOD!

I am an 11-year-old boy whose social studies teacher has given an assignment to
research and cook food that was made in 1840 in Hannibal, Mo., which is the time in
which the novel, Tom Sawyer, was set. I am going to have to make the food just like
they made it back then. For example, if I make a pie, I have to churn the cream to
make butter before I can mix it with flour for the crust. I will have to write a paper
about the food, include menues and iingredients available at the time, and even
discuss cooking utensils. My Mom isn't much help. I'd really appreciate it if you had a great grandparent's recipe or something and some information to go with it. It has to be from the midwest around Missouri, or something they could have eaten or made, and I'll have to site my source. Thanks.
