Recipe(tried): An energy candy recipe

Desserts - Candy, Chocolate

Hi, I don't know what GNC bars taste like (I live in Mozambique and we do not have this store) but I used to be quite a fan of Tiger's Milk Bars, which GNC sold back in the late 1980's (when I lived in the Caroline Islands and could occasionally go to the GNC on Guam!). This recipe from Diet for a Small Planet makes candy balls that are fairly similar. They are not low-fat, but at least you get some nutrition for your fat and calories. Sorry they aren't expresso-flavored!

Diet for a Small Planet Tiger's Candy (p. 304, 9th printing of revised edition)

Blend together:
1/2 cup peanut butter
2/3 cup ground sesame seeds

Stir in:
1 TBS brewer's yeast (optional)
1/4 cup instant dry milk
1-2 TBS honey
1/4 cup raisins, chopped fine
1/4 cup dates, chopped fine (or substitute other dried
fruit or more raisins)

Have ready:
carob powder or shredded coconut

Probably the easiest way to blend all of the ingredients is by using your hands [nb: this recipe dates from pre-food processor days; an updated version would surely state just to put everything in the processor and whir]. If the mixture is too dry, add liquid milk; if too wet, add more powdered milk. Roll into balls and roll in coconut or carob powder. Chill.
