Recipe: Apple Flake Crunch (1949)

APPLE FLAKE CRUNCH

6 cups apples, pared, cored, and sliced, about 2 lbs
2 tablespoons brown or granulated sugar
6 tablespoons orange juice, divided use
1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, divided use
1/2 cup corn flakes
1/2 cup unbleached flour; sifted
1/2 tsp nutmeg or cinnamon
1 tablespoon orange rind; grated

Preheat the oven to 375 Degrees F. Grease a 10x6x 2-inch baking dish.

Arrange the apples in prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of sugar then with 3 tablespoons of orange juice.

Work 1/3 cup brown sugar and 2 tablespoons butter together until creamy. Add the next 4 ingredients and mix until crumbly. Spread on the apples. Sprinkle with the remaining 3 tablespoons of orange juice and dot with remaining 1 tablespoon butter.

Bake in a moderately hot oven of 375 degrees F, for 45 minutes.

Serve hot or cold with whipped cream if desired.
