Recipe(tried): Betty Crocker Date Bar Mix Replacement / Very Good
Desserts - Cookies, Brownies, BarsI also loved the Betty Crocker Date Bars. I have found a simple and great replacement. Both items available at Walmart.
Buy the Krusteaz brand (raspberry bar mix) and replace the raspberry filling with the following date filling:
By an 8 oz. box (Amport Foods) chopped dates (they are by the raisins etc. in a purple box. They are chopped small and have all the sugar inside.) Add the dates to 1/2 cup water in a saucepan. Over medium heat and stir until water is gone, then add 1/2 cup more water. They mix up into a paste/spread texture.
Then after follow the directions on the Krusteaz box, which is to add 1 stick butter to the dry mix and stir (I do not use the entire 1 stick of butter as this will make the dry mix too sticky and not crumble up enough. I use only 3/4 stick!!!).
Place 2/3 amount of crumb mixture in a baking dish. Spread the date paste over crumb mixture and sprinkle remaining 1/3 crumb mix over top of date spread.
Bake for 15 minutes. (I do not bake for time said on the box as this makes the crumb mix a little too done.)
Anyway this is as close to the original as we are going to get until they bring it back. Good luck!
