I think this is one of the recipes you described. I hope it brings back happy memories:
Bon Bon Cookies
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1 cup shortening
2 cups flour
Confectioners' sugar
9 dozen walnut halves, cherries, dates, etc.
Mix cheese and shortening with a fork.
Mix flour in with hands.
Chill several hours.
Roll 1/8 inch thick on board.
Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
Cut dough in 3x1 inch strips.
Roll up with fruit inside.
Bake at 350 degrees for 14-18 minutes.
