Recipe: Butter Date Bars with Lemon Frosting (Woman's Day, 1960's)

1 cup dates
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 cup semisweet chocolate morsels
Confectioner's sugar and lemon juice (for frosting)
Cut dates into small pieces; set aside.
Melt butter and stir in brown sugar until dissolved; set aside.
Beat eggs until light; add vanilla, lemon peel and juice. Beat in butter mixture.
Sift flour, salt and baking powder into mixture and stir well. Fold in dates and chocolate morsels. Turn into a well-greased (9-inch) square pan.
Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) 30 to 35 minutes or until golden. Cool on rack.
Frost with confectioners' sugar that has mixed with drops of lemon juice until desired consistency.
Makes 24 bars
