This is an old recipe that I used to make all the time as a child.
BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup corn oil
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 cup sifted cake flour (i always used regular)
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8 or 9-inch square baking pan.
Combine sugar and corn oil. Add egg and beat well. Add nuts and vanilla.
Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Fold into sugar mixture. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake in 350 degree oven. 25 to 30 minutes.
Cut into squares while warm.
