Recipe: Caramel Fudge Cake (using cake mix)

CARAMEL FUDGE CAKE

1 (18 1/4 or 18 1/2 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
1 (14 ounce) package caramels, unwrapped
1/2 cup margarine or butter
1 (14 ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13x9-inch baking pan.

Prepare cake mix as package directs. Pour 2 cups of the cake batter into prepared baking pan.

Bake 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a heavy saucepan, over low heat, melt caramels and butter. Remove from heat; add sweetened condensed milk. Mix well.

After the cake has baked 15 minutes, remove from oven and spread caramel mixture evenly over cake. Spread remaining cake batter over caramel mixture. Top with nuts.

Return to oven and bake 30 to 35 minutes longer or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool.

Garnish as desired.

Makes one (13x9-inch) cake
