FLAVORED STAINED GLASS CANDY
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup white corn syrup
1/2 cup hot water
1/2 tsp green food coloring and 3/4 tsp mint oil flavoring*
OR
1/2 tsp red food coloring and 3/4 tsp cinnamon oil* or anise oil flavoring*
OR
1/2 tsp yellow food coloring and 3/4 tsp lemon oil flavoring*
powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Add sugar, corn syrup and 1/2 cup hot water to a saucepan and stir to combine. Cook over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Then increase the heat and continue cooking, without stirring, until 300 degrees F on candy thermometer or hard crack stage is reached. The heat may need to be reduced toward end of cooking time to prevent scorching.
Remove from stove, and add desired food color / flavored oil combination, and stir until blended to distribute color / flavoring evenly through hot sugar mixture. Caution, hot sugar is very dangerous and can cause serious burns.
Pour quickly onto buttered cookie sheet.
After cooling, crack candy into bite-size pieces with the back of a spoon.
Place in a bag and shake with powdered sugar, if desired.
*The small bottles of flavored oil can be obtained at the Pharmacy in Wal-Marts.
