Breakfast and BrunchFRENCH TOAST STRATA PIE
1/2 lb. bulk country sausage
1 all-purpose apple, cored, pared and thinly sliced
5 eggs
2 cups Borden or Meadow Gold milk
1/3 cup Cary's Maple Orchards or MacDonalds pure maple syrup
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 (1-pound) loaf French or Italian bread, cut into 1/2-inch slices
Additional Cary's or MacDonald's pure maple syrup (for serving)
In large skillet, thoroughly cook sausage. Remove sausage from skillet; drain and crumble.
Add apple slices to skillet; over medium heat, cook covered 3 minutes.
In medium bowl, beat eggs; add milk, 1/3 cup pure maple syrup and nutmeg; mix well.
In buttered 10-inch pie plate, arrange about three-fourths of the bread slices. Top with sausage, apples and remaining bread slices. Pour milk mixture evenly over top. Cover; refrigerate overnight.
THE NEXT MORNING:
Bake uncovered at 350 degrees F for 55 to 60 minutes or until set and golden.
Serve immediately with additional pure maple syrup. Refrigerate leftovers.

Hi Sandy!
I don't know how old this recipe is but it's from a collection of recipes that dates back many years. This is a 'brand name' recipe so maybe the one you're looking for is a variation of it. I hope the exact recipe turns up but in the meantime I think this one would be a yummy one to experiment with - I would substitute raisin bread (or add raisins) and cut the bread in cubes instead of using slices. I think it would be just as good without the maple syrup added - maybe use some honey instead or a little bit of sugar in the egg mixture (or no sweetener at all).
Happy Cooking!
