Recipe: Lynda's Mama's Sage Bread (yeast bread, baked in a tube pan)

MAMA'S SAGE BREAD

I hope you like this one - it is a favorite of the Luck and Davis families. - Lynda

1 cup milk
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon minced onion
2 tablespoons butter
2 packages dry yeast
1 cup very warm water
4 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
2 teaspoons crumbled sage

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a tube pan.

Scald milk with sugar, salt, onion, and butter then cool to lukewarm.

Sprinkle yeast into 1 cup very warm water in LARGE bowl stir until dissolved. Add the cooled milk mixture. Stir in flour and sage until well blended, then beat vigorously, scraping sides of bowl, 100 strokes (dough will be sticky and heavy). Cover the bowl with a towel and let rise in warm place about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Stir dough down; spoon into prepared tube pan.

Bake about 1 hour in 375 degree F oven.

Makes 1 large loaf
