MAGIC CARPET COOKIES
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
3 tsp. flavoring (almond or vanilla)
2 1/2 cups Gold Medal Flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Cream well butter, sugar, egg, flavoring. Stir dry ingredients together; blend in.
Reserve half of dough. Roll rest into 2 rectangles, 12x6-inches, on heavily floured cloth-covered board. Cut each rectangle lengthwise into 3 equal strips. With spatula, carefully lift each strip onto ungreased baking sheet, placing about 1-inch apart.
Spoon reserved dough into cookie press**. If too dry, add 1 to 2 tsp. cream. Using smallest star design, press out in long ropes on each side of each strip and one rope down center.
Bake 10 minutes, or until edges are light brown.
Cool; then fill in between rows with jelly or Confectioners' Sugar Icing (1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar, 1/2 tsp. flavoring and enough cream for spreading consistency; .tint if desired). Carefully cut into 1-inch diagonal pieces with sharp knife.
Makes 60 to 70 cookies
